I've only ever seen glimpses of the little guy as he moves around in the rock he calls home. So no photo. Very hardy - he came with some live rock from the LFS when I set up my first SW tank in Dec. 2011. He's about the size of a small to medium red banded pistol shrimp. Smaller claw though, with a tiny bit of white on the tip. He does snap/click once in a while. Very shy though, never comes out in the open. In one brief sighting I did notice some white banding around the tail section. Other than that and the white tipped claw - all black.
Any ideas on an ID?

I've looked and looked and looked. All I can find for a black shrimp is a few freshwater species. Are you sure it's not dark brown, or even red? Of course a picture is worth a thousand words, if the opportunity arises.

Try luring it out with some food.

Have you looked at these species? Alpheus heterochaelis or alpheus inca
Or there's a whole slew of them here http://alpheidae.myspecies.info/gallery

Thanks, that's a great site. Certainly see some photos that look like candidates.
Unfortunately I think this tough guy may be in trouble. He's been wandering around the sand bed lately. I only have myself to blame - I did a Bayer dip of a Zoa colony and I guess two long rinses wasn't enough. Lost a bunch of hermits already. I have a big bag of BRS ROX carbon in the tank so we'll see if that helps any. Best photo I could get so far - top down:

He's definitely unique looking. My fingers are crossed for its survival. Is there a chance you could remove it to a makeshift hospital tank while you try to rid the system of the chemical?

I'm sure you're already on top of it, but a massive wc would help, like 50-75%.

Yeah, I've done a smaller water change already but need to do more. Mixing now. Unfortunately I'm all tanked out right now with my rebuild in progress.
