I have small brown spots that keep coming up on my glass. Looks like some kind of algae maybe. Its hard to get off. I have to use a scraper.is this part of the maturing process of a 6 month old tank?

Yeah that's normal. Just scrape it off as it gets in your way. At least you don't have green grassy fields growing! keep that alkalinity up around 9 and your magnesium up around 1400 or higher and calcium up at 450. that along with good water movement should help keep most algaes at bay.
