Small clam

Hey guys so I picked up a small clam from reef a palooza yesterday and was wondering if anyone can give me care tips. I've never owned a clam so I'm kind of lost as to how it should be housed. It's sits on the floor of my tank and under razor led light.

Picture not that clear could be a blue maxima or crocea.. make sure you keep it standing straight up not leaning over like in the picture.. a pvc ring or clam hammock will help.

How deep is your tanks water? How far above the water level is the LED?

Yes make sure the clam is standing up straight as its that small.
Do not place it in direct line of high, medium flow is good.
Check your not got no air bubbles caught underneath by picking the clam up keeping it under water,burning it on its side and rotate it in all directions so any air caught will come out (important).

Based on the shell scute shape it is either a tridacna maxima or crocea. With all the import limitations recently they may likely be ORA or Biota acquacultured.

Either way these clams need high lighting in the 250-300 par ranges and need to be placed on a hard surface and not on the sand.

James Featheree's book is a great resource for clams. I know we all do impulse buys but asking the vendor during purchase about some details and doing some prior research will help for more successful longevity of any livestock and a result in a happier reefer.

It's under medium current and the tank is a 80 frag tank so it's about 13 inches of water and the like is 8 inches above the tank. All my rocks are full of corals so what other hard surface can I put it on ?

I was trying to talk to the owner but it was so hectic I assumed it was a maxima. Maybe I'll see of I can find them and ask what kind he was selling.

I am planning to start a 12 gallon long clam specific raceway nano tank plumbed into my 420 gallon system.

Doing my planning and collecting components.

If you are new to clams, squamosas and derasa clams are less light hungry and tend to be hardier. I definitely had my share of ups and downs with clams so I want to see if I can grow them in a system designed for them and keep them longer than 8 years.

Many of the issues I had were not water parameter related but due to pests that got into them over time. Bristle worms and vermatid snails seem to have been the root causes of my recent losses of clams I have had over 2 years.

Same depth and led night as mine, good. I've got a radion led at 30% intensity (remember the maxspect you have isn't as powerful) so maybe you should up the intensity more than mine. Remember maxima clams love light so really I guess as high as you want the intensity is good, providing you don't bleach corals

I've had my clam on 1.5mm crushes coral/sand and had no problems. I've currently got it on the glass tank bottom as I took my sand out for other reasons.

As for pests, make sure you check for them as they like to get in and eat the clam from the underneath. That's why people like to put a clam on a flat rock as it will fix itself to the rock eventually. Never glue a clam down. Whilst you can keep the clam always on a flat surface so it doesn't fall over.

Meaning seat it and then move it ?

No pick it up, keeping it under water. Then look at the bottom you should see a hole which is called the foot. Turn in a circle motion and see if any air is trapped.
