Small upgrade, from 12G to 20G. Questions.

Hello reefers,

I made a mistake when I bought 12G tank, there is no room for decent reef display, tank is closed on top with little opening, I have hard time cleaning it etc..

I have a room for 20G tank.

If I move rocks to the new tank, using same filter, same media, same sand, same pipes etc..do I have to cycle tank again?


Any advices?

No it shouldn’t but you want to considering getting new sand because all bacteria that’s needed is in the rocks how long has the 12 gallon been running?

For about 4 months now.

New sand makes my work even easier.

Make sure you rinse it before hand what is you stocking

I dont have fish right now.

I have 5 corals, couple of snails and crabs.

My plan is to get a par of clowns and maybe an anemone.

Before pulling the trigger I would do some soul searching. If a 12g isn't enough for you a 20g is probably a waste of time also. Just my 2 cents though. Everyone has their own constraints and what not. Just seems like a lot of work for a small upgrade.

I agree with @Jekyl I went from a 10 to a 20 then straight to a 30 so maybe consider a 100gal lol jk but this is good advice

Yeah I'm day dreaming about 75G all the time but reality is in this apartment this is the best I can do in next 2-3 years.

I could maybe go to 25-30G if I find a place that can make custom made tank with exact dimensions.

Any recommendations?

Funds play a large role obviously and apparetment rules also. That said a 60g cube has a small footprint. 2x2x2'
