are there any smaller reef safe tangs that could stay in a 45 gallon tank? looking for one that will only get 3-3.5 inches.
its a jbj 45 cube

26 long
19deep
21 high

you can get small baby tangs and as they grow you can trade them in and get a smaller tang again. That's what I did when I had my jbj 45 until I moved to a 90

If you keep your tank cool you can look into ventralis anthias. I'd also have a lid as they are expensive.
what is cool? I do have a lid, I like my fish in the dank, not crunchy dog treats on the floor

I wouldn’t pick ventralis as my first pseudoanthias. Expensive and touchy. Better choice for a small tank would be dispar or resplendent.

Tangs are a sensitive subject on this forum, but IMO I wouldn't get one. A tang won't have room to swim back and forth. Also, tangs have a thin slime coat -- when they get stressed, (from outgrowing the tank or not having enough room to swim back and forth) they are more susceptible to ich and various health issues. They generally say the tank needs to be at least 6' long and 180 gallons for tangs. Many will say even larger. 26 inches long is not nearly long enough. It sucks. I love tangs too. It took me 20 years before I had a tank big enough to house one.

I suppose ... just seemed like an odd recommendation .... maybe this person is an experienced reef keeper, dunno.

Odd recommendation? I was going off the amazing colors of the fish. Sorry, I'm not going to assume the "level of experience" when I don't even know the OP. Lol. I didn't recommend a peppermint angel;Hilarious

To answer the original question - no, no tangs (no matter how small) in a 2 foot long tank.

Some people say, even a 6 foot tank isn't long enough.

No need to get defensive .... like I said just seemed like a curious recommendation. Ventralis is a spectacular pseudoanthias, no argument there. It’s not Tuka hard, but it’s also most definately not easy, requiring a cooler, low light tank with calm tank-mates. Dispar better LOL.

It was meant as joke, not as defensive. My apolagies
