I'm thinking about buying the smart ato to put on my nano tank and It will be the first ato that I've bought and I'm just wondering how they work and everything because I buy my rodi water at my lfs and it's in a bucket so how would I go about hooking everything up?? Any help would be greatly appreciated thanks

Its very simple. You put the pump in the bucket of Rodi water and the fill tube in ur sump where your return pump is. You will also put the sensor in your return pump area as that is the portion of the tank tank that water level drops. just move the sensor ti your desired max water height and your good to go.
Watch out the water container with pump must be lower than your sump or fill tube otherwise you will start a siphon and once pump shuts off it will keep dumping water into your tank. Be careful of that

I use a Smart ATO. How you set it up depends on your system.

I have a sump, so I put the magnetic sensor/controller at where I want my water level in the return section of my sump. The power cord and pump both plug into this sensor and the pump goes into the bucket.
If you don't run a sump you can just put the sensor at the top of the tank with the pump in the bucket. It really is very easy.

Oh ok I didn't read it all in the way of the sump so I can just put the sensor at the top of the tank and put the pump in the bucket and it will keep the tank filled

I want to get an ato too. We also don't have a sump. Please let me know how yours works out. We have a tiny 8 gallon biocube with lots of surface movement.

You can use the Smart ATO on almost any nano tank, regardless weather or not you have a built in sump on the back , or a sump underneath your tank.. The two problems you may face are 1. It may not look the best if you don't have underneath storage or can hide it out of sight. 2. If you have to put it the main display, try to put it in the darkest area of your tank. This is because the bright LED's or lights on your tank could fool with the light sensor on the ATO. I marked on my tank where I want my water line to be, and placed the unit there..Anyway here is a video a little more on the set up, not sure about the learning curve he's talking about though, super easy to use!

Thanks. The videos help me a lot on equipment setup.

Do you think this could be done inside a Coralife 14/16 stand? With a gallon sized rodi container?

Yes. Is that what you have too?

This would make it easier for my 9 year old to keep the salinity balanced without risking a spill at the same time.

What ato are you using? I'm looking for something reliable, but affordable. Our startup cost has been much higher than we were lead to believe in our shopping before we actually got a tank.

I guess I will put this on the wish list for a couple of months.
