I recently started mixing my own saltwater. I'm making 0 TDS RODI and have plumbing running to a 32 g Brute. I leave some saltwater in the bottom of the Brute after doing a water change and a few days later it stinks like cat pee. Is this normal?

Happens to my Brutes as well if I leave the lid on. I try not to leave any water in the bottom of mine and leave the lid off to dry then no smell. :-)

What kind of salt to you use?

I clean mines after each use also but what about for those who have a permanent mixing area that can’t rinse out their containers?

Keep at anytime a small mixing pump in there.
I use TM and with or with out pump it won't smell.

I have a permanent station and have a pump running in it. It’s helped it last for quite some time. Before this it would start to smell after about 7days

I get the same smell from my brute trash can, I only use for holding RODI water. I have pumped the water into my ATO and the smell is gone. I tasted it to, RODI water doesn’t have a taste.

Do you have a cat? :)

I only clean my 32g Brute mixing container about once per year, and have noted this residual odor with several different salt mixes. I'm pretty sure it's bacterial in origin, but haven't seen any ill effects at all. The smell does dissipate quickly, and after a cleaning, the container has no odor at all.
