Smelly mixing barrel

Ok, so about 2-3 weeks ago I made a 30ish gallons of fresh saltwater from my RODI mixed with Tropic Marin salt in my mixing "trashcan" with lid. Week 1 everything was fine but week 2 or 3 i started smelling something. I was very ammonia'y so I opened it up and sure enough there is the brownish black stuff growing in the bottom. It had the lid on it and smelled terrible. Has this happened to anyone else and figured out why, im perplexed?

Never seen that. Could have been an algae.

Did you have a pump or power head in there?

Yes I have, I used some RO/DI water and lemon juice and cleaned the Brute that I use real good and cleaned the heater and power head real good also. I use IO Reef Crystals for salt and have seen others that use it have the same problem so I am going to switch salts when the bucket is gone.

Also I now make my water 2 days prior to water changes, mix the salt and add the power head the day before and the morning of the water change I add the heater, cut down on it a lot.

@Reefnman2 yeah thats what i started doing too. I just see BRS suggesting make a months worth so i thought i would try it.

Wait am i supposed to keep the circ pump going, lol?
