Smokin Reefs Dragon Skin Acan

Thanks for your replies and pm's.
Sounds like not too many people are having luck.
I myself had my colony ravaged by a bug, and am down to a smaller piece.

Alpha,

Sorry, I bit on the temptation to debate you on this one.
I know acans certainly can change color under different lighting.

But, there is one key characteristic that is typical to many many acans that the Dragon Skin never has.
*It never has the 'green star lines' on the interior that your pic has.
*It does have a two-tone orange interior, with a blue'ish mouth.

Forgive me, but I'm failing to see any similarities. Some pics below.

The oldest pic I could ever find that Junior posted.
This pic seems very original and accurate.

Junior's most recent and popular pic. There are noticeably some 'enhancements' made here , but still no green star in the interior. Just oranges with blue mouth.

Also, if you own this acan and it's red or gray, I'd debate that its not a DS.
The exterior doesn't go red, it goes to a dull tangerine orange under poor lighting or even too much MH.

Hope this helps for all of you on the hunt.

My Dragon skin definitely have the bright orange mouth but lost most of the rainbow on the outer ring.

Those look very much like a colony I have. I sent some over to Springfield ohio a few years ago. Wonder if its from my mother colony HMMMMMMMM

Sorry to disagree, but I can clearly see green striations around the mouths in your photo (most noticeably on the lower right polyp, but it's there in every polyp pictured above). It wouldn't surprise me if Alpha's frag used to be the same but had the green accentuated under different lighting.

I'm pretty sure that's where they came from.

They are still one of the nicest Acans I've ever seen.

I just unloaded about 10 frags with 2-3 heads apiece to a LFS in central NJ. He was sold out the first day and asking for more. I have one frag left of 3 heads, I kept it because it is not doing so hot for some reason, still alive but has been closed up for about 3 weeks.

No worries! I got these from a very respectable reefer who I spoke with last nite after my post and he told me that he got them from a reefer on RC who said they were Dragon Skin and that person got them from Smoking Reefs. I do believe this reefer is a stand up guy who has no reason to lie to me so I trust him. Its not like he sold them to me as the DS to hype them up... I asked him what his absolute best acans were and if he'd be interested in fragging, he showed me a pic of this one, said yes and I got it... I'm only finding that its the DS now after the sale. It is a beauty and still has some settling in to do.

As for the color differences, I have 60 acans and most of them have changed color under my lights. Some drastically, some not at all. I run t5's PM's 24" above the water with 8" deep tanks, my par is 130. Acans do change color. t5 to MH is the most drastic imo, what kind of lights are these other photos under? MH possibly??

I think its possible. Some color changes I have experienced have been pretty different. I would be interested in seeing others photos

:xd:

I suppose I stand corrected on the 'red'.
Someone else who has direct lineage claims this is DS also.
Personally, I just don't see any similarities at all.
Good luck to you all who are shopping. This pic boggles my mind/ makes no sense.

I understand that you can see some faint green on one of my pics, but it's decieving.
They really aren't there, and never developed. Nor have I ever seen them on any other DS pic.

This has actually turned into a really interesting thread. Crazy looking at some of the differences in pics of the "same" piece. I agree, its fry...some of these don't look anything alike. Not doubting the lineage of anyone's pic at all, just making an observation. Regardless, this in one amazing acan and one I would love to get my hands on one day.

I'm actually very interested also in the color changes. I moved my mother colony to a new tank with different lights, They are PC until I get my new hippo out of display, it is picking at my acans. I left the frag in there because it has never opened up and I do not want it to get worse if I move it, might actually help. Lets see what happens

This has turned into a very interesting case study.
I've been amazed thus far. This acan seems to be a mythical creature more each day.

These two images came with a direct linneage claim. My eyes fail to see the similarities with the original, or even between themselves.
Good luck to both of you in coloring up. I can only make a recommendation of a 6 bulb t5 setup, and don't move it for 6 months.

This image also carries the 'direct linneage' tag.
This little glimmer of hope actually shows similarities compared to one of my pics below it.
Mainly that there's orange, and green as the predominate colors of baby polyps.

An old frag of mine.

Its amazing how much acans can change. From have I have seen not all of it has to do with the type of lighting, T5 or MH. Many people send me photos of there tanks and coral after they have had them for a while. I am amazed at times to see how much acans change color. Many of the changes take place under the same lighting, metal halides.
Just like most other coral, you have to factor in the intensity of light, flow, nutrients and of course feeding.
