Hi all,

I see snails egg on my glass every couple of weeks but I never see new snails. Is it bc these still need a male snailbto go over and fertilize? Or do I just have no luck with them surviving the hatch or thru maturity due to predation or other factors? I do have hermits, shrimps, and other omnivore.

What have you experiences been?

Depends on the type of snails. Nassarius are the only ones I’ve been able to get to survive to hatching and through the larva stage. Although I know Trochus can breed and survive in our tanks too.

I think most eggs are an easy snack for most fish. I had tons of small cerith snails that hatched in my tank but I didn't have any fish at the time. At night its not uncommon for me to see around 200 small snails on my glass

I currently have baby nerite snails all over my tank that hatched

I see - i have mainly ceriths and 1 turbo so, assuming the eggs are not blanks, i'm guessing they just all turned into fish/hermit crab/shrimp/urchin/bristle worm food... RIP.

My trochus snails have babies quite often that survive. I have a coral banded shrimp, cleaner shrimp and hermits.

Nassarius and stomatella has been my survivors

I have about 100 of these that come alive at night Not sure what they are but ive seen some as big as a 1” they do a great job at cleaning the glass so far no reason to get rid of them. Thought I’d share

Stomatella successfully spawn in my tank all of the time. At times, it look smoke is coming from all of my live rock as 100s spawn at the same time. I can see female releasing eggs and instantly dozens of males release sperm.

Trochus breed and survive 100%. I know because I have a TON of babies everywhere right now. I've been giving them away 15-20 at a time and I still have at least 50 in there.

I have Mexican Turbo, Trocus, Stomatella, Strombus repoduced in my reef. I also have Chiton, small one only about 1/4 inches long reproduce in my tank.

I also have Collonista, which are tiny Turbo-like snails that only get to about 1/6 of an inch, not quite 1/4 inch

On the other hand we definitely have some types in our tank that are successfully hatching and surviving. Nor sure which ones, one of the algae eaters in our CuC, but we can definitely see more/smaller ones than we added.

I actually just bred some margarita snails!! I dont know if they are hard to breed, on google it says they are, but it was in not way intentional :) A few days ago i just noticed a few little shells that were moving around, and once i noticed the little black feelers, i was just like "wow i just made like 10 free clean up crew members" XD does anyone have experience with breeding margaritas? Are they hard to breed?

Well they barely live in warmer water tanks. I would imagine they are super hard to breed in reef tanks.
