Pretty sure this is a nessarius but just want some validation as I didn't buy him on purpose

I don’t think that is a nassarius, though other than eliminating that, I’m not sure what you have there. Nassarius are smoother and that seems to have some longitudinal ridges that I haven’t seen before. Nassarius also spend about 99.9% of their time buried in the sand, or on the sand when feeding. It is very rare to see them up on the rocks or glass.
 
Looks like a nassarius vibe x which is the smaller version of the more common big nassarius snails. The little guys are much more active then the large type and mine crawl around the tank all day.

but I may be wrong cause the shell looks a tad different then the ones in my tank so theres a chance it might be a whelk.
 
Technically Nassarius are whelks.

Does it go into the sandbed or does it stay on/in the rocks? "Bad" whelks usually stay out of the sand.
