Following along, I have a similar one that came as a hitchhiker. I am thinking it is a nassarius.
I don’t think it’s a cerith. I have those, and they don’t have that siphon that sticks up in the front.

Yeah that siphon is a good identifier, probably a nassarius.

Do cone snails get hitchhiked? Might be a reason to take caution, they have a harpoon in the siphon that is venomous. I always get worried around snails with siphons because of them...

My wife always collects shells when we are diving, and because she doesnt have pockets I get to be the bearer of shells...

The shell from the underside looks interesting.

possibly a baby whelk, but Most likely a Nassarius snail.

they can be harder to differentiate til they grow a bit.

Without a picture of the topside of the shell it is impossible to ID, but my guess would be an Euplica species.

Does the shell look like this?

I have this exact snail SMSREEF posted that I'm trying to identify. Does anyone know what it is? I'm thinking some kind of nassarius, whelk, or small variety of triton? So far I haven't seen it burrow in the sand bed like a nassarius though.

@SMSREEF Definitely a whelk or at least some type of carnivorous snail. I think the OP may have the same thing but I can't quite tell from the pic. I woke up today to watch in morbid fascination as the unidentified snail in question was attempting to devour an Astrea snail. On the bright side that whelk shell is going to make a cool hermit crab home!

That’s kinda what I was nervous about and am watching really closely. He is in my 10 gallon macroalgae tank now with snails and a small clam that I collected. Mine has not touched anything yet, but I don’t really see it eat anything either.
I have a maxima clam in my display so it is definitely not going in there until I’m certain it’s not a whelk. Hopefully when it gets bigger I will be better able to tell by the shell whether it’s whelk or nassarius.

This looks like one of the snail types I got from Indo Pacific Sea Farms. Its like a nasarius snail but smaller. THey have cool looking shells. I think it was a "Strombus" grazer. I got a number of species from them, so it may have been one of the others.

It looks like a whelk to me. Nessarius have a longer trail when they’re moving along the glass. If this snail doesn’t bury itself but hangs out on the rocks instead, it’s probably a whelk.
