So I literally have hundreds of snails in my tank that only come out when lights are off. I know snails are good for tank but when are there too many? What will help with my small snail population.

Leave them be. As time goes on only the strong will survive and they will even out. As long as there is enough food for them they will survive and thrive.

I guess it’s not a bad thing since I can’t see them when the lights are on. They totally disappear. Only thing I see when lights are on are the tentacles of the tons of micro brittle stars who are competing with snails I guess

AZMSGT is right about them dying off, with only the strongest surviving. but make sure you immediately take out any dead ones you can find as they will shoot your nitrates and phosphates wayy up if left in the tank to decay.

Unless the tank is the tiniest of picos, a few small dead snails are not going to shoot anything way up.

try and cut back the amount of food or vacum out the left over food. a over abunance of snails and brittle stars can occur when they got decaying left over food to clean up just the eco systems way of getting to the left over food thats left in tank

Less leftover food from fish = less pest snails and brittle stars.

It’s def my fault I def overfeed. I want to make sure all inhabitants are fed amd happy. I guess that’s more for me and not them. I usually feed either 2 small cubes of DIY food or a good amount of white worms ( Mandarin loves them).

They are def snails and not spirorbid worms.

Old post but FYI nassarius will eat other dead snail bodies if you have some so don’t worry about them decaying.
