Is it true that some snails can over reproduce and over populate the tank? Anything you guys do for population control?

I can not think of one snail commonly available in the hobby that will over populate?
Collonista are tiny, mostly nocturnal and populations tend to die back as a tank ages.
Stomatella are a beneficial film algae eaters and as previously posted housing hermit crabs will keep the stomatella population in check.
Is there a specific snail you're thinking about?

Even the feshwater snails were never an issue....maybe they have some new pest now, but back when I kept a planted tank I'd ask LFS's for ramshorn and cone snails whenever I saw them....never seemed to be a problem and I liked the job they did in the tank and under the sand.

I do have a population of breeding limpets, but they wax and wane with the nutrient/algae load a lot like the asterina stars.

Both of those critters bother some folks "because they get all over the glass" but I've always liked everything that gets all over the glass and every other critter in the tank too. ;) Never had a "real hitchhiker" like a bobbit worm or mantis shrimp that would possibly be worth worrying about.
