A few months ago, I broke down a tank and added the fish to my reef tank. One of these fish is a 6-7 inch picasso trigger. Before I added him I removed my nassarius snails and starfish from the display and moved them to my other reef tank. Turbo snails are the only ones I kept in the tank. Over the course of a few months, there was some algae growth and detritus build up. The detritus built up because I removed all my scavenging cuc. The algae growth stumped me until I figured out why today. My picasso trigger is pestering my turbo snails. I always wondered why I dont see them out as much. I saw my trigger push the snail off the glass, flipped him over, and bit at its trapdoor. I tried to save it but he isnt opening its trapdoor and I fear he is dead. Now here's the problem.
I need a snail that can eat detritus from my sand bed. I was thinking of a fighting conch instead of a nassarius because they have bigger shells to defend themselves against the trigger. But the experience I just received from the turbo snail is making me hesitate. Should I get a conch and hope the trigger does not pester it to death? Or should I get nassarius snails and hope they are smart enough to only come out at night?
My second question is does anyone have collonista, dove, or stomatella snails they want to get rid off? Since my turbos can not be my main algae eaters anymore, I need a snail that can reproduce fast in captivity so the few that get killed by the trigger wont make a bigger difference. And smaller snails wont bulldoze my corals and can get to smaller places.
Thanks and Happy Reefing
