That's not very nice 
Why don't you give it a nice little back scratch and scrub instead of getting rid of it....? Take him out and give him a gentle scrub on the shell with a tooth brush, then a small rinse in a container with tank water, then place it back in the tank?
If it returns, then you can dip a q-tip in hydrogen peroxide and carefully go over its whole shell.
