So this just happened… added 5 turbo snails to my new 200 in my office. I heard something fall on the floor and it was a snail that crawled out of the water and over the edge of the glass… is this normal?

It’s going to be an expensive hobby to replace all snails every week

Maybe it’s time for a mesh lid…

You need to get better behaved snails. Otherwise, the lid can also help.

I only have 1 turbo snail and run a mesh/screen top on my tank.
The snail has never actually gotten all the way out but I could definitely see it happening at some point, just based on places I've seen the darn thing:

Nerites do this as well. Trochus stay in the water do they might be a better option for you

Some snails will “jump out” , especially of rimless tanks.
Those below are safer for rimless tanks:
Astraea Snails, Dwarf Ceriths, Florida Ceriths, and Nassarius snails.

I did address him with a very firm tone of voice before I put him back in. Hoping he was impressed by that and will think twice before trying to escape again.
Joking aside, they will eventually learn not to crawl so high that they fall out...

Just looked up the nassarius and that’s the one that crawled out! I mixed him up with the turbos. I have two nassarius distortus in there.

I'd be skeptical about that snail. The nassarius snails that we want in our tanks almost never climb on the rocks or glass... not saying you don't have a weirdo in your tank, but I'd worry it's a predatory whelk...

Is there a way to tell them apart? I’d be very very surprised if my fish store would sell me those by accident.

Yes and no. There are many species of nassarius snails and some are very difficult to tell apart... Depending on their supplier (or their supplier's supplier), I would not be at all surprised if a LFS was selling something mis-labeled n.vibex or n.distortus. just watch for any mysterious snail deaths.

I have super tongan nassarius, and if they aren't getting enough food they try to base jump onto things. I lost a coral banded shrimp to them. Mine are on the glass daily to lay eggs, but ever since I figured out I needed to feed a sginificant amount more, they have stopped climbing as high as they can and haphazardly gliding at things.

I have some small pellets that almost none of my fish go for so I use them to feed the bottom. As soon as they hit the sand those two snails come out. And guess what... they went straight up and over! :grinning-face-with-sweat:
