Snails die but nothing else.

I was having problem keeping snails alive for 8-10 months. I was finding pyramid snails on my turbos, but wasn't finding them on any of my trochus, ceriths, or nassarus snails but they seemed to still be dying. One night when I was looking in my tank after the lights went out I noticed one of my trochus snails flipping itself back and forth like they do when they flip over so I grabbed a flashlight and found a giant polyclad flatworm about 3-4" trying to cover it. I immediately grabbed a turkey Bastet and blew it off the rock and removed it. I tested some PraziPro on it and it killed it in minutes. So I ended up removing all my feather duster, coco worm, and Christmas tree worm rock and put them in quarantine and treated my entire SPS reef tank. I left the medicine in for about 2 hours, then did a 50% water change and threw carbon in, and did another 50% water change the next day, my reason for the water change was to reduce the impact on the worms in my sand bed. I returned all my ornamental worms after a week and had no noticeable negative effect on the worms in my sand bed. It's been over a year and I haven't seen a polyclad flatworm since and very rarely lost a snail anymore, pyramid snails are still there but not causing any major problems and I remove them manually when the snails are easily assessable.
I haven't added anything to my tank that could contain flatworms.

Blue legs could be killing em. I use to have a tank where i only added blue legs and i could never keep snails, but my tank was mature. I chalked it up to them killing the snails.
I have crimson leg hermits and when I came home from work the one snail that had fallen was on it's back and dead and no cuc had touched it in over 8 hours.

The last one just fell off the glass imma let it sit over night and see if anyone picks at it.

My cleaner shrimp is merciless though I added some frozen food to try to coax the cuc to work and as soon as a feeler hit the food he snatched it up and ate 1/3 of a cube if frozen food himself minus some mess from eating.

Are you testing for phosphate. I did lose few snails recently when my phosphate level went up.

So I have read thru most of the post here. 1 thing I haven't seen anyone ask you. Have you tested your tank for stray electricity. Snails are very sensitive to it and you may have some. Remember not all problems in a tank are not water based. Goodluck

No I had a volt meter but can't find it I was going to pick one up but I figured I had a couple of months since everything is brand new, guess I'll go pick one up.

No but I don't see any way copper could have gotten into my system. Also if there was enough to kill the snails wouldn't the shrimp and crabs be doing just as bad.

Not necessarily, all my snails were dying but emerald crab, hermits and cleaner shrimp were fine. Put Polyfilter in my sock and sure enough it turned blue. Checked copper and there it was leaching from rocks that were "never exposed to any medications".

I got a copper test and a polyfilter arriving on friday.

You need to get bigger ones like this....kidding of course.

General Rule with "Polyfilter" is a little goes a long way. And store in Ziplock, no cross-contamination and expensive quality product.

Besides color chart for diagnosis of possible exposed chemical, if the resin is still thick can rinsed and reused unless coloration displays that chemicals were present. If present toss, add new one, and focus on waterchanged and new carbon. But if used piece has sufficient resin left and just slightly has algae or detritus: rinse in old tank water and put back in filter.

Basically, try and always have in tank unless, dosing and worried about absorbing paid chems/elements.

That way you know whether to rush and buy, get from LFS.

I'm running a fluval 106 with ceramic media an added bio filter a polishing pad, carbon, and purigen the only reason I'm getting the polyfilter is to see if there's anything I need to worry about besides that I've got everything that can possibly fit into my filter.
