Ive always thought I’m pretty mediocre in the area of aquarium keeping and feeding, but after setting up this new tank after my move I’m not sure what to think anymore.
Over a month ago, I set up my 55 gallon. I cycled it, placed 20 pounds of live rock, 40 pounds of live sand, and some aquarium supplements for CCA and stuff.
I started with getting a damsel to test the water, I learned later this was ignorant because damsels are very hardy and doesn’t actually “test” the water as you may know.
After the damsel lasted a week, I decided to add hermit crabs and snails to keep aquarium algae under control. First I bought 5 large turbo snails, which had not moved for a few days, and later died within the week.
I thought this may be due to not drip acclimating them. After pulling them out, I decided to buy some astrea snails because I really needed some algae maintenance.
I first acclimated them to temperature for about 30 minutes. Then, I put them in a clean bucket with their own bagged water and added about a cup (more or less) to the bucket every 15-30 minutes until the bucket has gone from less than a half gallon full to about a gallon and a half.
After that I put the snails into the tank. At first only one had moved a substantial amount, the rest just here and there. Now none seem to really be moving. What seems to be wrong? All my aquarium levels are just fine, my fish and hermits are fine, I’m obviously missing something.
Thank you.

What supplements for CCA ?
Are you sure the snails were alive before adding them to the aquarium?
Nothing with copper has ever touched the tank or rocks?
What sort of water are you using?
I know these are dumb questions but maybe something is there you over looked.

How long did it take for you to acclimatise them? In my experience inverts need to be drop acclimatised slowly over a couple of hours making sure the temperature doesn’t drop.

I’m using things like purple tech, but not in excess for algae.
The snails were definitely alive before adding.
I don’t believe anything copper has touched the tank. I will buy a test kit soon for good measure.
I’m not using RODI water, but I’m using purified water to top off the tank and if I really need tap I use water conditioner. I should be buying an RODI unit soon.
I understand not having RODI water is an issue, but I had a basic setup with a precious tank in the same way and I never had snails die like this.

Maybe two hours or more. However the temp may have dropped in that time.

Purple up contains calcium, strontium, magnesium and carbonate . I would suspect that it might have raised something too fast for the snails to handle.

Have you tested for ammonia, or are you just assuming that it cycled? With all of the additions and deaths in such a short period, I'm wondering if this tank is truly cycled.

Can you test with any kits you do have and post updated parameters...

+1 @SDK
Did you get it tested and everything? Also could be low food for them or even another picking on them and stressing them out.
