Hi I'm new to the hobby and have a fluvol evo 13.5 Gallon and have had it running 3
months. I have:
six line wrasse
skunk shrimp
Acan
4 zoa frags
Hammer
Torch
Octospawn
Plate coral
Flowerpot

-I have been through 4 trochus snails and 1 Nassarius snail. They have all died ‍♀️ I banished my scarlet crab to the sump because I thought he might be the cause of my snail loss, but since then I have had 2 more die. Now the last two mornings I have found my coral (acan and plate coral) starting to bleach/die? My water parameters are:
nitrate: 5
Ammonia: 0
Nitrite:0
Salinity: 1.025

Any ideas what is happening to my coral? Could my shrimp or wrass be eating my snails and/or coral??? TIA!

Very nice and clean tank. I could be that there is just enough for them to eat.

I like the scape also.

Sarah,

Merry Christmas and a big welcome to our Reef 2 Reef family.

Truly don't know your answer but I've had snails die off at about 1600 magnesium.

Either way, Hope you find your answer and feel comfortable as apart of the R2R family :)

Newer systems are hard to keep cuc happy and fed. Also, if they are not acclimated, they can die rather quickly. More than likely a food thing for yours. Try some cerith snails. They seem to be more hardy and eat lots.

What do your corals look like when you say bleached or dying? Could be they need less light or more food. Do you feed the plate?

Stray voltage will do it. I had 48V of induced voltage in my tank and almost every snail and hermit died very quickly. There was no amps detected, just an induced voltage from the electric interference in the equipment. GFCI outlet and a grounding probe and my voltage problem is gone, and the GFCI doesn't trip. New CUC coming this week, hopefully I have success with this batch.

Thank you! I haven't been checking my mag so far. I only bought the "master reef kit" so far. I'll look into that though.

Sarah,
Your welcome!!!

If you'll let me help you out???
Buy the Salifert magnesium test kit when you get the chance :)

As well as testing your dt water for magnesium level, test the mag level of fresh saltwater you make too. It maybe that your salt mix could have too high a level of magnesium.

Activated carbon can pull copper out of water. Even a mesh bag with carbon in it might help. If you have an old house with copper pipes it could be leaching into the water.

Oh yes, I am. I have purigen and fluval biomass bio rings in my sump. When you said "running," I wasn't sure if there was another technique I wasn't aware of. I am going to take my water to get tested for some of these trace elements. Thank you for your advice!

I would say that given you are running RO and not RODI some form of trace elements have been given the opportunity to build up in your system (copper as mentioned above as well as potentially many others). Excellent idea getting a test done to see where your at, Which will hopefully point you in a good direction to resolve any issues. I'll second the suggestion of running carbon to help remove anything that may be in there now.
