Snails in HOB overflow

How do I prevent my snails getting stuck in my overflow. I have avoided a disaster 3 times now and my luck will soon run out. Any idea on how to stop them?

I've used eggcrate to screen off, and hobby shops often have black knitting screen that has even smaller mesh and works.

No backup/emergency drain?
