Lol I should go back to working in a materials science lab to have access to a mass spectrometer. Too bad I discovered reefing 10 years too late. I had a friend that used to run NMR on certain controlled substances he liked. This is much tamer!
Do you know what your friend used to compare results with for a baseline?

Funny, there is an ICP-MS setup in the lab upstairs from mine. I’ve thought about it, but not worth the risk. I don’t think they would like my aquarium water in an instrument used for pharmaceutical analysis…
Yeah… I would not try it in a quality control environment but I had several well burned in columns that were used as rough tests when we had a sticky materials that might be problematic that could be used without much fuss to evaluate something that wasn’t super clean. They’re also not super expensive in the grand scheme of things.

I also have always worked for very small companies where there isn’t as much red tape as long as you’re not doing it on company’s dime.

this is very interesting. im curious on the maganese. do you just buy it straight? how do you add it?

This is their store

They have an excel based calculator to estimate your correction dose and your daily dose

The bottle is BIG and my daily dose is .2ml a day. It’s like 3-4 drops lol

I would ask them in a heartbeat. They might be able to do a run before they do their routine oil change on the machine?

I have a small bottle from triton for manganese but just bought a bag of manganese sulfate monohydrate to make my own batch. Should last a long time.

Remember this is just pure manganese additive and I’m only filling to the first marker line each day. It will last months and months

Unless icp shows 0 and then I will need to increase the dosage

I still expect a lot of life from this bottle

The problem with these machines is that there are these fancy columns where the different components of sea water or any other sample essentially burn in at different rates. The organics in our systems can be sticky in that setting which can mean damaging the column and making it difficult to clean off or even not usable after running the saltwater test. This is where these labs that we send our tests to are great, they have precise protocols to make sure this doesn’t happen. And there’s a ton of work and research that goes into getting there.

where do you get it? you just add it directly to the tank? im thinking i need to start up my AFR here soon. but dont want to try too many things at once.....

AFR contains some manganese. That may be enough for your system unless you have some big manganese consumers.

LOL. Not a chance. Huge pharma you know the name of. Maybe at a startup or smaller company, but mine has too much corporate red tape and quality SOPs that would probably catch on fire at the mere mention of this :rolling-on-the-floor-laughing:

Thanks for sharing the link. I have been thinking about doing another ICP test and I want to try a new lab.

I have dyslexia- and like to share the results when I laugh at myself-

I was wondering what BARFUM was? Totally in line with the snake oil question in this thread, which added to the irony.

Edit:For normally sited people the I in barium appears as an F to me. Hth.

Sadly for me this happens to often :loudly-crying-face:

I do add lots of bottled coral food items live and dead along with pelleted foods to feed the little mouths, & AB ( two people swore about it, one gave me a huge sample in a bucket) and I try not to put my hands and arms in the tank to keep my oils out.

Understand, completely.

I would still ask but I would wait for the right moment and executive to launch the request on.:face-blowing-a-kiss::cool:

And I would report back with the results either way.

I do comprehend the delicate nature of the test equipment. I would also not hesitate to ask to borrow your expensive racing car for a test spin around the track. Sometimes people who have access to these things are willing to share them, especially right before routine maintenance where the tire, engine, and motor oil will all be tossed out and replaced. For a racing car this may happen after each race, for the testing equipment its not as often but when it comes time for the procedure sometimes it can’t cause problems because the business end will be replaced in the process.

Again, not likely to happen but it will not happen unless you ask.

I have built access roads into National Parks for emergency response purposes, it would not have happened unless I had asked. Lots of people were surprised that I got permission, many separate instances and purposes, asking is the key

All fair points. I’m the one that said I would try it myself if I still had access to the right equipment!
