First I do agree these are probably the ugliest coral out there, and certainly the ugliest I own. I got these about 2 years ago from someone who had them in their tank for years. At the time I hadn't seen them in forever. I was doing some coral shopping on Sunday for the first time in 2020 and the store had some! They are even uglier than the ones pictured (more brown) but of course I bought them.

Normally the only time I see them open is the true middle of the night. Today I was up early and for some reason shined a flashlight on the tank and they were open.

Are those NPS?

I believe they are photosynthetic. That being said they don't really grow much.
They are photosynthetic- I heard they like high light. Putting mine in higher light really brought out the green color in the stalk of the coral, which is better than the gross brownish color that it usually was. I wish mine would open up like that- I have one polyp and it is curled up until about 1AM-5AM, but I never see it unless I wake up and pass by the tank on the way to get a drink or something.

Really nice. Thanks for sharing

I had some for six years and they never opened. I did not know they even had zoanthid-like crowns until this second

my isaurus never opened ever but they didn't die either, just remained.
