Sitting here lazily in my green thermal underwear and watching the snow coming down hard has got me thinking. Today might make a great day for tank maintenance. I know I should have done this already myself but it might also be a good idea to test out generators for those of us that have them. I read earlier that there is a power outage already across town.

Testing a generator on a bright sunny day when the worst-case scenario is a little less drastic than 30 degree, emergency vehicles already busy with other yahoos who don't know the difference between brake and accelerator seems a little more rational... IMO

Deep thoughts: I have been out of the hobby for about 5 years and looking to possibly buy a fully stocked system. Any ideas/suggestions on prep for such a move. (I.e. QT corals and fish and clean everything related to display...?) From tear down to arriving at my house I am estimating 3.5hrs. Thanks

Save at least 50% of the old water clean from the previous location for the new setup. Don't reuse sand.

Thanks fishdoc. A guy at aquatic critter had mentioned concern about the sand. I have a nano 24g that I am thinking about getting set up to cycle some new sand and future QT.

Not sure about cycling new sand just to move it again if that's what you meant in your post. Seems like moving it would just cause another mini cycle once moved. Never done that before myself though. Might be a good idea if you created a thread with your question about moving a complete system. It'll be more likely seen and responded to instead of hidden within this thread.

You won't need to cycle the new sand as long as you are adding old rock. If you want to keep some of the life in the old sand you can take the top 1/4" or so and put it on top in the new tank.

Or in liu of adding old sand to the system, put a handful of it in some pantyhose or fine mesh and then add that on top of the new sand for a week. this should seen bacteria for you.
