I don't have a skimmer. Just using a canister filter and have a wave maker.

I’m have not spent too much time around canister filters, but check if the filter/inlet and tubing need cleaning (if I remember correctly, the filter might pull air in from its surroundings if the water flow inside is hampered). Usually, HOB skimmers have sponges on their outlets to collect microbubbles, but this is probably not ideal for a canister filter.
