So I had a pair of snowflake clownfish. I woke up this morning to a crispy one laying in front of the tank. It was the smaller one. The question I have is would i be able to get another clownfish and them be able to pair up. Does it have to be another snowflake or could it be a nearly naked one or any of the other varieties. Has anyone ever experienced their clownfish pairing with another clownfish even though it had already paired with another.

On another note i did just assemble the BRS top and have it on now.. Unfortunate event and a day late on the top.

Yes, a clownfish will re-pair if its mate dies. I had actually had a similar experience with two of mine. The male of my pair of black snowflake clowns was unfortunately killed by a powerhead. I was able to get a juvenile for the remaining female and they bonded without much issue. As long as your replacement clownfish is small, there should be no problems creating a new pair!

Thank you!

well.. i went to my LFS and picked up a regular clownfish. I thought it was for sure smaller than mine, but when i got home and got it acclimated and looked at in my tank compared to my current female, they are pretty close in size. Dang thing grew in the bag on the way home.... She is picking on the new one quite a bit. chasing him around and nipping at him when she gets a chance. Hope this is just growing pains and letting them figure out who the boss is.

They will eventually figure out who the boss is, if not you may have a bit of an issue with territorial dominance. I had a similar situation, 2 snowflakes and the small one died. I decided to get a black percula and put him in, they took a liking to each other almost immediately. Now they're inseparable and bounce from anemone to anemone together.

Im hoping this will happen to mine as well. This morning before i left for work he had moved out of the corner that he was being pushed to by my snowflake last night. The new guy was pretty tired by the time I went to bed last night. I felt bad for him lol.

If they are close to the same size, both could possibly be females. If this is the case, they'll never be compatible.

On a side note, regarding jumping, if you're able to get a host anemone and the clowns take to it, I've found that jumping is minimized. When the fish get spooked, instead of jumping, they dive into their anemone.
