Hello guys,
was wondering if there is any way of accurate determination knowing HOW MUCH food my tank needs?
I just feed every day "a little bit" and always hope it is ok. A finger tip of flakes and every 2 days frozen cubes.

Are there any signs for to less feeding?
  • If fish maybe fight each other when they get fed?
  • If they are picking stuff in the sand or on the glass? (during non feeding time)

Are there any signs of overfeeding?

  • If my sand gets fast on top some brownish coloured stuff?

Thank you!

As long as your parameters are ok feed a lot.

You say you feed “cubes” every 2 days, why not feed less every day rather than more every 2 days.

Which parameters change when there is a feeding problem? nitrat at overfeeding?

nitrate and phosphate.

But don’t think of it as “over feeding” the best idea is to feed the fish as much as they need, if that increases your parameters then you can take measures to reduce those parameters.

If you can’t feed the fish well then the issue is with your nutrient export.

May I ask how often these 2 should be tested/checked in general?

phosphate at least every couple of days or even daily at first as it is an important parameter to keep low, until you get a feel of how your tank is, as you don’t want it going over 0.1 as that can cause bad algae, nitrate a little less often, maybe once or twice a week, again once you understand how your tank is, then you can test less often but until then, test so you know where your parameters are.

Generally, there are two kinds of fish, grazers and predators. Grazers such as tangs and angels feed all day long. Therefore, they should be fed small amounts several times a day. Predators like groupers or morays can have one good meal and may be satisfied for several days. They can also be gluttons and may try to eat constantly. This is bad for their health. When I worked at a pet shop, I usually recommended that if you see food after three minutes that you fed too much.
