Today I mentioned to my co-worker, who is very nice and far from a bad person, that iam starting a saltwater fish tank. She goes on to tell me how she used to have a tank and that she kept putting fish in and they just kept dying. I go on to explain to her you need stuff like live rock and to cycle the tank ect.. her response was... "oh....oops" she says she spent hundreds on fish. And so this kind of got me thinking, how many people end up doing this? put little to no research in and just kill hundreds of fish annually probably. I asked who set you up and told you what to do? she said the guy at the fish store.... which makes me a little worried. Maybe there should be an animal wel-fare side in the forum which we can point each other to sustainable shops and maybe education for the uneducated ( not that the whole forum is that )

Not all fish stores do it but they are definitely out there. A lot of people don't do the research but if they were to walk into a fish store, the vendor should get an idea and base their sales on that. In my opinion, your friend is wrong for not researching why the fish kept dying but the fish store would be to blame for continuously selling this person fish just to die. I would have to assume she wasn't going to multiple places to buy fish. I bet she was going to a big named store.
I dont think alot of big-name stores sell salt water fish? yeah.. that was my whole point she did zero research, and my main point was - that how many people do this?? doing zero research. I was maybe pointing to the fact the store doesnt really care weather the fish are dying or not, but that they are just making more and more money and maybe giving her bad advice. co-worker*
I think many noobs go on a "killing spree" before it finally gets reined in. Many come from a FW background where it's next to impossible to kill anything (especially African Cichlids). Moving up to SW takes everything to a whole new level and much of what you learned in FW no longer applies.
I hope my post doesn't sound arrogant, but I do have a background in both. I actually really miss my FW tanks sometimes because I was able to (almost) put them on autopilot after some initial planning. My SW tanks I am a slave to and sometimes it feels like they've taken over my life.

I think many noobs go on a "killing spree" before it finally gets reined in. Many come from a FW background where it's next to impossible to kill anything (especially African Cichlids). Moving up to SW takes everything to a whole new level and much of what you learned in FW no longer applies.

Lol. I keep a fw tank going as well. It is filled with glowfish. Fw tanks. Set in and forget it
