Hello, new member here. Been away from the hobby for a dozen years or so, and it's amazing how much things have changed! Lemme give you some background....

Got into saltwater in the early 2000s. Started with a 75g FOWLR, that soon turned into a softie/Lps reef. Which turned into a second 75g FOWRL for my non reef safe volitans lion, and eventually added a 40g clown/anemone tank. I loved the hobby, and after a few years, had some nice established tanks, and was looking forward to moving on to something bigger. Around 2005, life decided that I didnt need to have so much in my life, and those tanks all sadly went bye bye.

Fast forward to last month, and life had given me the chance to rekindle my interest in reef tanks. My plan now is to finally build a 125g full blown reef. Everyone here know how expensive it is, so I'm trying to keep costs down by buying used equipment, and diy-ing as much as possible.

In the last few weeks, I found a 125rr tank/stand/canopy ($400, but the stand was questionable and I probably wont use the canopy), a nice Esopps 200 sump/Octopus skimmer/Waveline pump ($250, and he threw in 50# of dry rock), three 165w Viparspectra LED lights ($90 ea on Ebay flash sale), and most of the rest of the equipment off Ebay flash sale, 180# of sand (.50/# off a Petco flash sale, with fre shipping).

I'm at the point now where I just need to get it all put together. I'm hoping that by keeping up on this post, I will better motivate myself to get it all done in a timely manner. Thanks for reading, questions/comments/suggestions appreciated!

Diy stand, nothing fancy. Some 4x4s left over from a job, a couple 2x4s/6s, and 2 hours after work the other day. Will skin the sides later, and salvage the doors and hardware from the old stand.

Tonight's accomplishment: dedicated 20 amp gfci wired up and functional. It was a long day lol. Tomorrow and Saturday don't look good for getting much done, hopefully I can get the stand leveled and set the tank on.

Think I'm gonna have to modify the stand to get more clearance. If I remove the floor of the stand, and flip the top cross supports onto the flats, I can gain another 4" or so.

Got her plumbed. Not glued yet, so lmk asap if you see potential issues! Ended up doing some rework on the stand, now have enough room to completely remove the skimmer should the need arise. Dual Herbies, siphons will be submerged 2"-ish, emergencies will run dry since I only have 2 bulkheads in my sump. Return over the side, may put some Lockline on at some point.

Drains will make noise. Having the drain height that low will cause the water to cascade into the box. Also the "stockman" type drain will "toilet flush" on you.

The size of the drain will be limiting on flow. Your emergency drain size is the diameter size you want for main drain size. Consider doing a "Durso" type drain, it will be much more quiet.

If doing herbie, your going to need some gate valves on each drain to create a siphon.

Here's a better pic of the drain to sump. 2x 3/4" siphons should handle 2k gph, and will terminate below the sump waterline. The 1" emergency drains will be run dry, and terminate above the waterline for noise alert.

Where's your gate valves for the Herbie?

Tap water test in progress. One overflow leak so far, luckily on a threaded fitting. Also got an RV garden hose threaded through the floor and down into the utility room, which will be my water and mixing station.
