Hey now fellers. I kinda made a mistake. See when it comes lighting I always by AI. I did so for my first saltwater tank and I didn’t think it through. I need two and I already bought one. I’m either gonna sell it or keep it for a future project. I can’t justify the two AI’s for a 40g breeder 6 fish fowlr

So what I am looking is a good FOWLR light for a 40 gallon breeder. I’d prefer something that has decent control.

Any suggestions?

T 5 light strip? They have some Amazon 2 strips for cheap. Change bulbs to whatever color you want. Or mars aqua led box? That might still be overkill but only 80 bucks for a 24". Mount it high has white and blue channel

One AI prime should be OK for a fish only setup, just mount it a bit higher. They also sell diffusers for it and blinds to reduce light spill.

I like reefbreeders but for a folwr current USA has some good options

I'm a coral guy 1000% but if I ever did a fish only tank I'd probably go with Current also. 2x Primes would be great on that tank though (and be good for coral to boot but yah a lil overkill)

I'm not familiar with Aquatic life but it really doesn't matter with a folwr. A weaker light will grow less algae. Is it a possibility you get corals one day?

Theres always justification hahahah

FOWLR can also have some soft or lps corals even if you dont want them now or you never have, it's nice to have the option.

The 1 AI will light the 40g breeder just fine. If you dont think it's getting edge to edge then raise it up a bit. Those lights are crazy strong for the size....is the AI ypu bought a prime16 or a hydra 32?...

I can’t do Corals I am doing a puffer. I just want vibrant light. These lights have done wonders on my fresh planted tanks.

I can’t hang this light so I might have to fabricate something. I’m gonna try this light out for this application but I’m not 100% sold yet. Maybe braze together some kind of mount.

Now I gotta go pick more eggs out of my axolotl aquarium and hope I can raise some axo-littles :)

Fwiw I had a porcupine puffer in my reef for a couple of years. Best fish I have ever kept. He would leave the corals alone except he would take a bite out of anything new I added. To add a coral I would have to distract him with food while I placed it. But it was stressful.
I'd at least look into some lower light soft corals with a puffer.

I know nothing about soft corals. I was gonna add some algae to the tank to give it a bunch of color. I’m starting to get intrigued by corals.

Soft corals are typically the easier and cheaper corals. If it munches on here and there it isn't a tragedy. What kind of puffer are you planning on? A long stringy algae would be very tempting for a puffer

It’s only a 40 gal breeder so a saddle or saddle valentini with maybe 2 clownfish or something and 2 gobies (for eating detritus).

Oh ok, a valentini is a totally different story. I've had one and it didn't bother anything. But that's just my experience

i think I’m gonna grab a reef brite as it is only $100 ish.

I tried it and I don’t think it will work. While I thoroughly enjoy how violet and green can make the blue look fantastic, the brightness of the light itself (being mounted higher) and where I’m sitting on the couch make the light source itself shine in my face. Plus There is a nasty shadow on the equipment.

But man is this light awesome. I looks phenomenal. It’s amazing. Yes it’s enough for a 40g breeder. Yes it has unbelievable control. No I am not selling it. This light alone is enough reason to do a reef tank.

I’m just gonna go with a reef brite and save a little money and put it toward live rock

PS- don’t mi d the crookedness off the pic I just looked up and snapped

Current USA would work just fine for a FOWLR (and someone suggested, maybe just enough for some softies in the future).
