So it begins..

So, I like to research... a lot. I have been researching saltwater tanks for 10 years. I don't even know anyone who has one! About every quarter I find myself going through a 2 week binge just researching everything I can about the hobby. At this point I question If I will like the hobby as much as I do researching the hobby

Initially I was in a second floor condo for years with a no pets policy that prevented me from going further. Then I started becoming all adult like and went through the new wife, new house, new baby stages of my life. Things are calming down a tad and my saltwater itch is growing again.

I took the initial plunge yesterday and bought myself a 40 breeder and 20 long from Petco and their $/gallon sale. I am going slow with getting everything so I am probably another year from having a wet tank, but at least it's a start. I am very much a DIY guy, which is another thing that intrigues me about the hobby as well.

I am looking forward to interacting with everyone. Get ready for all my questions!

You can start as low tech or high as you prefer/need. A simple hang on back filter or canister filter from freshwater along with consistent water changes can make for a very decent first saltwater tank.

My wife and I started transitioning our many freshwater tanks to saltwater about 8 months ago. 3 are still running canister filters with no problems other than needing to remember to clean filter floss every couple weeks.
Actually, I feel you can start "to" complicated and get frustrated with all the details, numbers, and parameters. Starting simple allows you to get started and gain momentum as your knowledge grows.

There are many MANY ways to approach this hobby and very few are "wrong". What works for one may not work for others.
