my newly set up 120 gal. fowlr. 140 lbs. of live rock and it took less than two weeks to cycle. now the brown crap is everywhere. my cuc from reefcleaners arrives on Friday. I don't even want to turn on the lights. I hate looking at this.

It's my understanding that you don't necessarily need lighting during a cycle, so leave the lights off. It should help minimize the brown stuff.
Feel free anyone to correct me if I'm wrong about lighting during a cycle or algae bloom.

I like the rock scape.
What stock list do you have in mind?

After a few months this will only be a distant memory. This is that "Large dose of patience" that we must get through before reaping the rewards of a BEAUTIFUL SALTWATER AQUARIUM. Hang in there and before you know it you'll be amazed at what incredible life will be swimming around in there.

Cheers, Todd

yeah, I know. the waiting just sucks. planning on a one spot foxface, a dwarf angel, a couple of smaller butterflies, and some smaller fish. maybe a kole tag as the last fish.

You can turn your lights off during your cycle and that will die off. As stated above, lights are not needed.

you can also leave your atinics on during the cycle. what works for me when i cycle a tank, i tend to leave my lights on & set my timers. these things are a living organism & you could say it has some form of memory, where it gets use to a certain lighting period. in turn, anything in it, will know when to wake up & go to sleep. maintaining that routine, will promote good health within all living organisms in it, from bacteria & algae to fish & coral. i actually like my tank to get extremely ugly. in my case its a sign of bacteria blooming & good growth of algae. giving me a good idea of what kind of cleaning crew i will be needing, like star fish, hermits, snails, crabs, urchins, shrimps, so on. which i find it fun to buy & watching them go to work. hope this helps. so, good luck & happy reefing.

that's the only aiptasia so far. going to try lemon juice. might get a couple of peppermint shrimp. the tank is cycled. I didn't run the lights and only run them for a few hours now. leds are the cheap Chinese units from E-bay. 32 3w bulbs. it's a fowlr so no need for better lighting. most of the Halimeda that was on the rock is gone. plucked most of it and the rest I guess due to the low lighting.

I am into my 3rd week of cycling new tank and my numbers are PH 8 Ammonia 0 Nitrite 2 Nitrate 20 and when I look into the tank from the top, it looks like black dust on my dry rock. Can someone explain to me what that is?

Thanks

Kalkwasser works the best for removing aiptasia! A syringe, little bit of water, finger tip of kalk in to the syringe shake and feed the bums! Not inject them!!! but put a little on their disc with out them noticing you. They will close and die, and the kalkwasser (limewater) is very good for your tank if done right

It's a new tank with no coral as I understand correctly?
If it were me I wouldn't mess around I would take that rock out and let that sucker dry out.
Perhaps a dip in some ro for a wile too

Yes it kills the rock. But you have so much good rock when you put it back in will become live a gain. And it's free.

If you p1ss off one aptasia with kalk lemon etc. it will split into many. Been there.

Btw nice tank , wait it out. And good eye spotting that sucker

I gave it a shot of lemon juice last week and so far it has not come back. just looks like a little white glob.

What are "my cuc from reefcleaners" ?

I HATE,....them **** aiptasia's ! I tried many things to kill them but, kept coming back. That's one reason I sold out years ago. Get rid of them now, so they won't drive you crazy later !

aiptasia to me is worse than a tank crash...if it was me i would be taking out those rocks scrubbing them down with my steel wool brush and then taking the infected rock and throwing it FAR FAR FAR away from my house out of a window and preferably down a sewer drain of sorts...those suckers are the worst and just get worse with time
