so who got the peppermint angels?

crazy catch. Rufus was in 300+ feet of water.

whats sad is that beautiful fish will end up dying in someones tank. Something that pretty and rare i think should just be left alone.

How do you know this?? Do you know where these fish are going? These often end up in a public aquarium or such.

As for the price, pretty sure the last one available, sold for around 30K

I would hope a aquarium would get them. Only way for them to truly be enjoyed. Or maybe just left in the wild.

I doubt they are really rare in the wild they just come from such deep water in a remote location that its rare that someone goes down and gets them.

Thats amazing they caught that many, I remember that one in the Hawaii aquarium was the only one ever seen and now someone came home with what was t 3-5? Amazing fish.

Thinking if u can afford 20K for the fish, u arent gunna worry about a couple thousand in coral

The one in the Hawaii aquarium was the only one in public display (originally collected as a biological specimen to be preserved in a jar, but its on loan the the aquarium until it dies), at the time it there were knly two (know ) to be in captivity. A person in Japan had one in private collection already.
I remember reading that on a dive, they would see many of these peppermint angles (amongst other "never been kept" fish) but just out of reach or too fast to catch. If you think catching a fish in your tank can be hard, imagin in open water, fighting against current (and time), and fish that know the territory and can dive into the reefs where its impossible to get to. It's not that they are rare in the wild, just never brought to the trade, cost of the expedition alone demands the high prices.

Rufus caught one the same time the waikiki aquarium got theirs from Smithsonian (I think) divers. Hes diving 400-450ft. Which is absurd. He just posted a photo online with a peppermint and another yellow fish before the story broke of him catching 5. Theres a yellow fish in the same tank as the peppermint which is the only one known in captivity.

Dang, so you telling me they are all sold?

I get the fact that they are rare in the trade, but am I the only one that wouldn't buy one if they cost $100. They just don't do anything for me in looks. I'd rather have a Potter's, flame or any number of "common" small angels than this one.

It's all in perspective!!

i would have to agree with you on this to a point.... they are very nice but not 20 grand good but i could see myself spending a few hundred on this one but i do not see the asking pricing going in to the 20's or even 30 thousands.

Left in the wild and extinct in 50 years? I hope a pair of these fish go to a experienced angel breeder and is aquacultured for future generations.
