Being Australian (lucky me I know) R2R is the only forum I visit for reefing, other then a local Facebook page

In my post of my build Monster Tanks 400g+ I dont think I have one negativ
e comment.

But a general rule if you cant handle the criticism dont make your stuff public I always say

My big old beef is contests that are either entirely or mostly won or lose based on social media REFERRALS. I don’t have 1000 social media “friends”, more like 200 tops, and far fewer who are going to either care a whit about my hobby other than the “pretty fish” and still fewer yet who will engage in a contest to win stuff they personally can’t use. Yes, @AlgaeBarn I am pointing at you...love you guys despite It all.

I love Social Media and reefing. My husband started in the hobby back in 2001, before Facebook lol. The only source of information for him was Magazines (that they don't publish anymore). He got back into the hobby in 2011 while stationed at Fort Lewis, WA and had to sell everything due to being stationed in South Korea and a divorce. Both of us got into the saltwater side of things back in 2017 with a IM 25 Peninsula Dropoff tank.

It was so nice to be able to watch BRStv investigates and read people's reviews on equipment! We were in Upstate NY at the time. We moved to Greenville, SC that July and lost a lot of coral. Of course we didn't know then what we know now.

In 2018 we started bidding on coral on a Facebook group and we were able to do local pickup! We saw their setup, and after a few times of picking up orders and talking to the gentleman that runs that business, we decided that we wanted to get in the business side of the hobby as well. We finally started our business last August as far as applying for all the paperwork and we were able to place our first order mid to late September. We wouldn't be here if it wasn't for Social Media honestly.

If we're not including forums as social media then I only use Instagram and it has impacted me positively via giving me goals and inspiration for various scaping/corals/fish combos that are fun looking.

Forums have drastically improved every aspect of my reefing

I have read mostly great info. In one case I had a chiller elec problem that a forum member solved for me I had the problem for years and thought it could not be fixed

Personally it has had a negative impact for me. It basically destroyed our local reefing club. We used to have a thriving local forum and a fairly large local membership. At one point a second club actually sprang up for a few years. We had a spring frag swap that usually included 3 big name speakers and was a nice all day event. After facebook took off for the reefing aspect the forums basically died and the annual event was dropped due to lack of attendance.

R2R is the only social media I do. I don't have facebook. I don't have myspace (is that still a thing?) I don't have instagram, pinterest, youtube, buzzfeed, anything.
This place is all the social media I need :)

Yes!!! I do have Facebook, but not all the other stuff. The Myspace comment cracked me up. I remember deactivating my kids' account years ago, thinking they would be abducted by aliens or something!

I dont do facebook just read online and here. When employers started asking to see you social media accounts on a resume that confirmed that I did not need one. Maybe im just old but I dont need the world knowing everthing I do or say lol!

I don't do Facebook, haven't for a couple of years now. I love YouTube and I can find a lot of DIY ideas for the tank and I have learned a ton (BRS). R2R is my place to go if I have a question on something. A simple search gives me tons of info from reefers that "have been there done that." I have been on the R2R for 2 years now , so I know how to weed out the bad info. Most of my social media time for reefing is spent on IG. Mostly because I love to look at pics and is a super easy way to share my tank.

I really enjoy the social media, especially those that have taken the time to make videos of pages of their tanks to document their progress. Fun to follow and a great way to learn through others

So today I want to pick your brain a little and in return we get a nice topic and I get some talking points for an upcoming presentation! I'm sinister I know! Muhaaaaa! (evil grin)

With the advancement of social media we have had a tremendous growth in the popularity of our hobby as well as an advancement in reefing knowledge and education. People use many different outlets of social media to discuss, and learn about saltwater aquariums. These outlets include, but are not limited to, Forums, Facebook, Instagram, Youtube, Reddit and more. Social media impacts reefing in so many ways both positive and negative and that's what I would like for us to talk about today.

How has social media (forums, facebook etc.) impacted you in a positive or negative way? Talk about both if you will.

What’s great about social media is we can learn from others mistakes. Before buying We learn and can picture what we like when it comes to the whole setup. Lots of information to help make a educated decision. Learning what people do and seeing the results through their display tanks. Learning peoples regime and sticking to a plan that works for your lifestyle to ensure the consistency stays there since that is key to success. I can keep going! Lol There’s always going to be false/bad information/advice but You still learn from that and that too is just as important.
