I have a 34 inch Trigger Emerald sump. Should I use the socks and sponges or just skimmer as the mechanical filtration?

I don’t run any socks on either of my emeralds. I use the sponge after the baffle though.

How are your results. I'm constantly changing things in my sump. Don't know what to stick with. Right now I have no sock but I do have the sponge in the sock part and I have the top baffle sponge then the egg crate then about 3 mesh bags of matrix then a phosphate sponge and egg crate and return pump. I'm about to take out the Phosphate sponge

My results are pretty good, I just had a few compliments of my insane water clarity yesterday actually. I have nothing where the sock chamber is. Oversized skimmer in the skimmer chamber, marinepure balls & macro algae in the fuge on a reverse photoperiod, I run chemipure blue and chemipure elite media bags on top of the sponge in the baffle. That’s it :)

Looks almost like my display tank. Mine is a 90g. Just trying alittle something different in the fuge. I might change my mind and get rid of the coral sand.

I am half and half the sponge is 100x easier and does a great job silencing.

But socks do have a purpose depending on your filtration.

I like socks year one to two. Then remove. At this point the job of socks can be hopefully taken over by sponges, feather dusters and corals.

In a new tank with few filter feeders I find sponges let too much pass through.

All opinion btw [emoji23]
