I bought a Fuji Cube sump that has 2 sock holders, it came with 2 “nylon” Mesh type bags ? Just wondering if media GFO,carbon, bio could be put in these socks and use 1 in the sock compartment vs a reactor which I know would be better but looking to see if I can save a bit. Thanks

You don't want carbon to tumble otherwise it will break down and release into the tank... which has been known to cause HLLE disease.

As for GFO, in a sock, you can't regulate the flow through it.

I wouldn't recommend either in a sock. Better control with a small reactor.

That’s what I was thinking, just wasn’t sure what the nylon socks were for

My Bashsea sump cane with nylon type (thin) socks. I used them, but the thicker socks from BRS work better IMO. So I have swapped them out now. I think it’s just a preference.

The sump cane with both the felt type and 2 of the nylon type ones but really didn’t say what they were for I thought maybe some type of carbon, gfo

Hard to know what you mean, if you are talking about filter socks and depending on the size of the tank, may be best removing them and replacing with filter wool, if the bags you are referring to are media bags, make sure they are very fine as carbon etc need fine mesh.

If keeping the socks you can drop a bag of carbon etc in them but not ideal as they are meant to filter out detritus so the media will clog fast.

I normally use the ones on the right The one on the left is what came with the sump

Those ones are easier to clean, they are filter socks but still can be a pain, you can use them and see how you go or swap to filter wool, you can buy cups With holes in the bottom to replace the socks, you then put the filter wool in them and change every 2-3 days.

You can add biological media in the cups too but as said before they are normally where your tank water flows into so get dirty fast, this will clog up the media, if you do go for the filter wool and cups, it’s not as bad as the wool sits on top of the media so helps to stop most of the detritus getting to the media, for carbon etc I would place else where as if the media is in bags you don’t want detritus blocking the bags, which would reduce the flow getting to the media, but can be placed in the cups if short on space, biological media in the cups with wool on top is not so much a concern, tho it’s still a good idea to keep it clean with a rinse every few weeks.

In my aio I put carbon in the thin nylon sock. Twist the bottom and put a rubber band around it then rinse it good to get the black dust out. No different then throwing it in a nylon bag and tying it.

If I’m understanding you correctly...how do you clean the sock if there is carbon in the bottom?

I have a very light bioload and don't run carbon more than a day or so at a time. But, I have taken it out and cleaned the top part in ro and left the carbon in. I guess where it is twisted most stuff gets caught above the rubber band. OP had a 2 sock compartment. I'm no reef expert, still very much a novice but, it works for me saving space in the 10g.

You can definitely throw some chemical media into a sock, especially those mesh socks because they are very easy to clean. If you are worried about tumbling media in the sock, just throw a little floss on top of it in the sock. I found the socks way too noisy in my Fiji Cube sump. I much prefer the tray that it came with. I run a piece of filter pad in there. Much more convenient and quiet.

Oh right, makes sense if just using carbon for a day, I use carbon 24/7.

If you use the BRS ROX 0.8 make sure you tie or use floss. It will float up as soon as you put it in the water.
