dealing with the sock filter on my sump is by far the biggest pain in my behind about the saltwater maintenance. Can I remove this sock all together? Will water still be able to filter and clean properly without the sock on there?? If you have done this, did you replace the sock with a different format of "polishing" the water? I say polishing because I've been told that's what the main purpose of the sock is..?

Yes, you can remove it without any issues....a lot of people run their sumps without socks. I personally would just continue to use them....knowing that all that gunk that is getting trapped in your socks would be recycling through my tank would drive me crazy lol. I use one and change it out once a week. If you took it out, you would just need to increase your cleanings in your sump since that is where a lot of the detritus would end up.
