Going on vacation for a week. Everything, other then changing socks, is pretty much automated on my set up. Would it be risky to run with no socks while away to prevent them from overflowing?

Well without them all of that stuff that may be caught by the socks will just be in the sump anyway. It isn't going to hurt either way. I wouldn't stress over it.

Its not like it could hurt. If the crud doesn't rot in the sock it will rot somewhere else lol
Just make sure that the socks clogging doesn't drop the pump chamber's water level too much. If you are super concerned, you can go with something like a 200-300 micron mesh sock which would last longer before clogging.

Assuming they overflow into the sump when clogged, I'd just leave them in so you get a few days filtration before they overflow.
Alternately, there's probably no real harm taking them out if you feel safer. I did it for a two week vacation 6 or 7 years ago and everything was okay.
What are you doing about the skimmer if you have one?

Leaving the socks on while away might cause you ATO to dump in more fresh water as the socks will restrict flow. I would remove them a couple of days before you leave to let the tank settle with water volume.
