There are many industrial grade "Soda Ash" products on the market. Some may test well, but again... it's the allowable impurities. If that batch has super low Heavy Metals, for example that's great. But if it's near the max allowed of 10 ppm, might be an issue. In today's internet world, it's not hard to find a higher graded Sodium Carbonate where the grade itself protects you.
I had this discussion with Leo Morin of Seachem in the mid 90's... and he was a proponent of buying raw materials by the test results of the individual lot or batch while we were using only USP and ACS graded raw materials. He was a very knowledgeable man and I respect his expertise immensely.
So to summarize... if you can evaluate an individual batch with a COA... and not a "typical" test number... buy the raw material by the COA, otherwise buy by the grade.
