Sodium nitrate dosage for raising nitrates

Hi Randy,

Think it has been discussed in the past but am really poor in chemistry. Thought I would check with you.
I want to increase my nitrates in my sps dominated 80 gallon tank which is hovering around 0 currently.
Looked into Spectracide stump remover and somehow cant convince myself using it without knowing what traces of heavy metals are present although many had success. Moreover, my potassium is a big high around 420 and don't want to add to the fuel.
Hence sodium nitrate. But want to understand dosage .

Could you help me figure out how much dosage is necessary to slowly raise nitrates to 3-5 ppm? How should I mix the stock solution ?

Dissolve 10g in 1L of RODI water. 1mL of this solution will raise NO3 by 0.8ppm/2gallons.

Pretty safe to use as the American Chemical Society sets the specifications.

If the formulations and dosage are same as other NaNo3 , I would go with 10 ml in 1 l of RO and start dosing 0.005 ml of it in my 80 gallon tank so as to raise nitrates to 1.6 ppm daily only slowly over the next week considering 1 ml of the stock solution raises nitrates by 0.8 ppm / 2 gallons.

Am I doing something wrong ? May be as I am so poor at this..

Oh believe me, on this topic it's more Randy as me.
Most of the stuff I got from him years ago already.
I just can prove the facts it works if you look at my build thread or spotlight post in my signature at the bottom of my post.
I'm hoping that the info I give out makes other hobbyist as successful but I really want them as you be better as me and other old knuckleheads like myself :rolleyes:

When you say "formulations and dosage" how much dry powder are you planning to add to RO water for you stock solution? You have 10mL did you mean 10g?

Hey Tim , I got dry powder form so meant 10 g in 1 liter of RO to make stock solution .Just followed @Diesel advice ..

If you dissolve 10g of NaNO3 in 1 L of water, then 1mL of this solution should add 7.3mg of NO3. 80 gallons is about 303L so you would need 485mg to raise nitrates by 1.6ppm(mg/L). This would be equivalent to adding about 66mL of this stock solution of 10g/1L. Maybe someone can check my work on that?

Wow .. I was really off !!! Thanks for correcting it .
So I would need 66 ml of the stock solution to raise the nitrates to 1.6 ppm .
