I have a rock directly under a HOB outlet (aquaclear 50). Is there any softie that I can place directly under downwards flow, or should I either leave that spot bare or rearrange my rocks?

Most corals do not app0reciate direct flow, especially if it is constant. However, a HOB does not produce that much flow unless it is super charged. I have kept GSP, sinularia, even duncans under a HOB and they were fine. Just not too high in tank to get bombed.

Most can stand higher flow but appearances may not be optimal. I've had finger leather, xenia (non-waving branching varieties as the waving won't be seen in high flow), toadstools (go with short polyps) and gorgonians placed in direct flow from return and/or smaller powerheads (400-450 gph). There's a limit but doubt the AQ50 is going to hit that - used an AQ70 on a 20 gallon tank with the above corals with no issues.

Also would stay away from Kenya tree in higher flow. It'll take it but when they drop branches to reproduce it'll be all over your tank in no time.

Blue ridge coral is a leather.
But it looks like sps. Classic columar reef building coral.
