My green polyp leather coral won't open back up. What do I do!!!

If that is one of those green toadstools, they have a tendency to look like that every once in awhile and rebound back pretty quickly. Not too much to worry about. This is assuming all your water parameters are in check.

Mine use to do this every once in a while for some odd reason but it came back to fluffy in a couple days or so.

Never look directly at it. Never Point or speak french. It may help.:D

Grumpy grumpy corals. How long you had it? params all oK? good acclimation?

Welcome to R2R! I'd give it a few days as long as your parameters are right, leathers usually go through phases where they'll close up for periods of time, sometimes shedding their skin and opening up bigger and better than before.

I have had this guy for about a week now he was open for a couple days he took to the tank great. Later one day I found that he closed up! He has not open since all parameters are great I have tried everything and the only other thing is he might be shedding and is there anything I can do to to help this?

Could be shedding its outer layer which they have a tendency to do especially when being put in a new tank.I have a neon yellow toadstool which did great for a long time then closed up and stayed close for more than a month. It was not until I moved its position that it reopened. I am convinced that it was not fond of one of the corals I put near it.

I bet you looked directly at it.

They're pretty weird. Actually seem to appreciate stronger light and robust flow. I was always told differently.

So finger leather have sweeper tentacles or anything that will. Other coral near by?

Sorry for the typos. So your saying finger leather corals do or don't have stingers? I have it pretty close to my ricordea. So I just want to make sure.

No " stingers" but as said leathers excrete toxins that some corals don't like. But if you run carbon you should be fine.

I stopped running carbon months ago and replaced with Julian springs bioplastics npx. But I've been thinking of going back to carbon.

Mine does this all the time! Parameters are perfect, I have moved it around, tried different coral foods with it... They can be pretty grumpy. Mine sheds all the time as well, could yours be shedding?

I use my leather toadstool and Duncan corals as warnings that something is not right in the tank. For some reason, they tend to react quickly to water quality issues for me. The questions below are problems I have had to correct in the past to address my leather being closed. Thankfully mine has been extremely hardy and bounced right back after fixing issues. I agree with others that this could just be a shedding issue as long as he has good flow.

Do you have measurable NO3 and PO4?

Have you had any big alkalinity swings in the last few days of more than 1 dKH?

Is he getting enough light and flow? I have my leather toadstool at about 250 PAR and close to a power head that flows pretty strong just above the toadstool. It really surprised how much this guy likes fairly bright light and good flow.

Are there any euphillia (hammer, frogspawn, torch) corals that are too close to him?

If you are still having problems after a day or so, I would recommend at least a 15% water change. Water changes have almost always got my leather to bounce back.

Good luck!

You didn't state how long he has been closed for. They do this time to time, I have an Australian pink one and it will close up for a couple of hours maybe once every 2 weeks or so.
