I have pretty hard well water and was planning on getting a 5 stage RODI system with a second inline canister of Di.

Well myself and the wife are tired of cleaning faucets, shower heads and the coffee maker, so I’m going to install a water softener. I haven’t had my water tested yet but I have either iron or tannins and also lime/calcium issues. With that said I’m assuming I could drop down to a 4 stage RO?

Second add on question. Is it more efficient and long term cost effective to run 2 canisters of DI, 1 cation and 1 anion?

Thanks everyone.

5 stage usually just has an extra CTO carbon right? I have the same issue as you. I put my water softener right before my RODI. Keep in mind a water softener doesn't really lower TDS, it just replaces ions for sodium ions. My well water has 600 TDS and psi of 45 to 55. I just upgraded from 4 stage BRS RODI to a 6 stage just because the incoming water quality is so bad and got a booster pump to help my RO out.

You may also find that your DI gets burned out quick on well water too. it's from the high CO2 levels commonly found in well water. I have my RO dispense into a brute tub where it degasses for a day then through 2 stages of DI into another brute...

I say go straight for more stages to save you the money and hassle of upgrading later.

Also cation resin and anion resin can get used up at different rates... for me my anion gets used up quickly while my cation doesn't. I have the 2 di cannisters so i replace them individually.
