I would like some advice on possibly adding soft corals to my system. Right now I can keep SPS's but they grow very slow. I've been scared to add softies (other than zoa's) for fear of them taking over my system but I am beginning to think those fears are overblown.

I am wondering what soft corals I can add to my system that will provide color, structure for my fish and/or interesting movement without being invasive like a Kenya tree. I will also say I am not interested in adding any NPS corals at this point.

Zoas are not that aggressive and some types are slower growing. Some palys like grandis palys are nice looking but not too invasive. If you get a toadstool leather be aware that eventually they get huge. Although they grow slowly they can take up well over two feet of room

Neon green Sinularia. A lfs here has a red Sea cube that has a giant Sinularia as its centerpiece. It looks great!
This is a picture of one from on here somwhere I don't claim ownership!

Speaking of invasive... I have a lot of overhangs which leads to a lot of shadowing. I recently started adding mushrooms to fill this empty space and it's working out pretty well.

I would suggest maybe some nicer lps corals. Like torch corals or branching hammers. There are some great colors available.

I actually have a branching hammer and a frogspawn. Two of my favorite corals. Great recommendation though.

Pretty much stay away from the invasive things like Xenia.
Mushrooms can overtake a tank too, though certain ones aren't much of a fast grower spreading to all locations like the common red, blue or green ones.

I like Lps and leathers to fill in certain areas. Different brains have great color and growth patterns adding to the visual appeal of the tank. Some encrust areas and grow in low light areas that sps either provide or cannot thrive themselves thus adding structure and diversity. Just remember that leathers can get pretty moody with neighboring corals and release noxious chemicals into the water to impede growth or kill close corals.
To alleviate this running carbon is recommended and works well.
