Ok, let's be honest...
No matter how cool you are- no matter how awesome your Chalice collection is- you still love soft corals. Yet, most of you will never admit that Pulsing Xenia is hypnotic and oddly addictive to watch. You refuse to acknowledge the fact that Neon Green Sinularia is one of the coolest corals in your reef. And that Sarcophyton that got so huge- it's your favorite coral because it's the first coral you grew out from a frag! "Soft corals are so last century" you'll casually say...
Nope. You love 'em.
But you'll never admit it.
Sure, you'll point out to every casual visitor the "Ultimate Utter Chaos" Zoanthid, Tyree "LE" Acro, and the trendy "Convict Chalice" that you just got, but the one that will grab the visitor's attention is that pulsing Xenia! Let's face it, the hypnotic movement, interesting color, and endless variety makes softies dynamic additions to any reef.
It's time to come clean...
Softies are interesting enough to warrant their own aquarium. Sure, many of us started with soft corals and then "progressed" to SPS and other types of corals. However, I submit to you that these are incredibly addicting, engaging, and challenging corals. In fact, since you're now a more experienced reefer, you could put together an almost entirely sustainable system with just softies! Make cuttings of your corals and "plant" them throughout the tank. Use this tank to show non-reef people and beginners just how easy it is to propagate many of these corals, and how we can preserve natural populations for generations by fragging what we have.
A soft coral aquarium is not just different now days...it's a beneficial and dynamic "teaching tool" that can inspire others. If we all maintain just a couple of softies, frag them up, and distribute the frags to others who do the same, it probably wouldn't be all that long before we have enough material to warrant very limited collection of these corals from the wild.
You must have a favorite soft coral...I know that I do! Share your fave softies...Let's see some pics, hear the story about that "ginormous" Colt Coral colony, and the Xenia colony that you let take over your reef back in the day.
