Hi Gareth, Long work day but want to respond. Saw your post though this morning and really appreciate your taking time to get back. Wouldn’t a Toxin Test kit be a gold mine! You may have something there lol. $$$$. I do have BRS carbon/gfo reactor that I’ll be putting in my new sump. Maybe I’ll order 2 or 3 of just the plastic reactor casings and have each one filled and rinsed for a months supply. But between you and Fin, I think I really need to bump up my carbon while eliminating some softys. Fyi I do have a SpectraPure RODI with dual tds meters. So I’m good as far as top off and new Salt water is concerned.I speculate this will come down to a variety of factors.
-How much gac.
-Amount of dissolved organics
-And intended goal.
For water color with slightly heavy feeding at recommended quantity i find 3 weeks, before it starts to lose effect.
For toxin removal, i have no idea. Or even how to test. Some of these like palytoxin are huge molecules and very water soluble. I assume you could test with a TOC test the overall change in organics but i dont think there is a hobby test kit for this.
I change my reactor once a week, but this has more to deal with keeping a schedule than actual utility.
Hey Gareth, shoot a couple pics of your tank. I’d like to see it.Hi Gareth, Long work day but want to respond. Saw your post though this morning and really appreciate your taking time to get back. Hey Fin, I don’t want to be a pest but the photos of your very cool reef tank don’t have all the text and data that my pics have surrounding them. What did I do wrong? New at this. Thanks for any help.![]()
Welcome, Glenn! Another 60+ yo reefer, like me.I have kept softies and stonies together and it can be tricky, but doable. To combat the toxicity of the softies, I ran small amounts of carbon 24-7 (changed it out roughly once a week or so), along with a good skimmer. I also had a 30 gallon remote refugium crammed with caulerpa.
This was my 75 Oceanic from the turn of the millennium. All of the SPS in there started out as small frags that I got from the LFS or trading with other local reefers.
