So this is my first internal skimmer. As I was told it takes a week or so to break in. I've had it running for three days now and every time I put the collection cup on it overflows in less than a minute. I've tried adjusting the air valve and it still over flows. It's sitting at the correct water level in the sump 8". My question is, is this normal? Should I just ride it out for a week without the collection cup?

Skimmers will go nuts for a little bit, especially when brand new. Is this your first time with an internal skimmer or first time with any kind of skimmer on this tank? It could be that there is something in your water that the skimmer doesn't like and it's causing it to go nuts. Have you replaced any filter socks recently or anything?

First time with internal skimmer I just picked up this tank 3 weeks ago (used). I've always used HOB because I've never had a sump. Nothing new though. I filled the tank two weeks ago. Same filter sock since day 1, there's only sand and a couple pieces of LR. No epoxy or anything. You think is just the new skimmer acting up and breaking itself in? I don't mind leaving the cup off was just curious.

Yeah I think its just the skimmer breaking in. Mine went nuts for 3 days before it finally calmed down. Open the air inlet valve as open as it will go and let it have at it.

Any reason why I’m getting a lot of air bubbles out of the discharge?

Remove the drain cap on the cup and just let it go nuts. Even better if you can put a tube on the drain to get it closer to the water line to avoid splashing.
