Hi all, first post and new to all of this so go easy on me!

I have a RS Reefer 900 up and running now for about two months. Just had a big outbreak of Diatoms (I think!) brown algae everywhere and now I also have that awful smell that seems to accompany it. What actions should I be taking here? I'm seeing that a large UV steriliser may work, is there any other tricks I can use?

Appreciate any help from you all!

Thanks

Welcome to Reef2Reef!

I've never noticed a smell with diatoms. Are you sure you are smelling the diatoms and not something else, such as the brown algae or something else related to your reef? Do you happen to have any good photos of the brown algae by any chance?

There was a fair amount of brown algae. I lowered the lights for the past few days and added in a substrate cleaner (to help the sand discoloration) I don'h a photo atm, will try

Sounds good. When you say substrate cleaner, could you clarify what that means?
