Goniopora...... Really.
I've had this goni for over a month now. It never wanted to open up. High light. Low light. High flow. Low flow and everything in between. So today I was done with it and placed it on a rock where it did not bother me. I have nicer ones. It is completely shaded wit only a little tip getting some light. And look who comes peeking out

My LFS calls them "rent-a-corals" because you never get to keep them.

You could try a few drops of Lugol's. I have delayed the inevitable with it a few times. Once just recently.

mine is a exception to the rule as you can see to the left image now 3 years old and over 150 heads yours might end up like this

I’m glad it’s finally coming out for you!

I’m a little surprised to hear everyone saying these don’t last very long??? I’ve had mine for like two years and the polyps extend like 4 inches every day. Does anyone know why these don’t last long in the aquarium?

I am on my third goniopora (pictured in LPS softy frag tank). My LFS bet me I couldn't keep it longer than 6 months and I've only a month to go!

I have acropora coming out of my ears, but I've never understood my previous goni fatalities. They look great for months in the same spot, same conditions, then one morning they won't open, and melt within a couple weeks.

Aside from fish poop, what are you successful keepers feeding?

I am not sure if feeding the coral it self is nessecery. I have only one that is responding to spot feeding. If it is a feeding responce at all. One by one the tentacles retrackt. But actually eating the offered food i did not see. So i do broad feeding. Just some juice from mysis or artemia and some gonipower. I did read an article that stated that iron is benneficial. As in keeping the algae inside the coral happy so that the coral can life of the product of the algae. I do dose iron and manganese and iodide. Not sure if it makes a difference

It could have been a shortage of trace elements in the past. I only randomly dosed Iodine, as IORC says it mixes to .06ppm Iodine. I did an ICP test a week or so ago and it came back 0 Iodine. And no arsenic. I sent it off because a few animals looked "off" including the goni with much less extension. I dosed some Lugol's and it opened up quickly thereafter.

A lot of vendors are offering aquaculture Goni’s now and they are super easy to keep. Until my stupid clown decided that my Goni’s where A house. Seriously does anybody make a small harpoon or spear gun?? I am desperate And value my Goni’s way more than the stupid clowns. I would have to break my tank down to catch them. That does not stop them from biting me when my hand goes near my Goni’s though. I hate them so much

In J. Sprung’s book volume 1 his theory is there may be a element from our doseing that is missing. Causing the gon. To slowly die after a year or two. Years ago I had a yellow ind pink one that was beautiful. It lasted about 18-20 months. Then it stopped expanding one day and slowly died . I did notice it was about a year after when water changes became less frequent . One poster stated that he thinks not haveing a protein skimmer helps him . Maybe . If someone knows for certain then let me know.

I do water change every week
30% but I alternate between natural ocean water one week and synthetic the other week. I am also sure something is missing in the salt mixes. There is an article here on the forum about goniopora in Waikiki. Which states higher levels in Iron and manganese. I belief it to be from advanced aquarist.
