So just an update...tank is still doing well. The algae is not at all gone but i am living with it. Every few weeks i manually remove any large clumps that are getting out of hand. i would love to find a way to kill this algae without nuking my tank but in the meantime i am learning to live with it.

I would try to starve it out -aggressive nutrient removal, at worst should limit growth and your cuc maybe able to keep in check, I would look to correct the root problem(no pun intended lol) and not count on your cuc to keep in check they are a bandaid were a stitch is reqiured.
